One of the most lightweight PDF reader and fast is Sumatra PDF. If we only need to read the PDF document (no need to edit or add annotation features etc.) and may be looking for a lightweight alternative to Adobe Reader or Foxit Reader, Sumatra PDF then can be the solution. Not long ago, the latest version of 'Sumatra PDF' was released, Sumatra PDF 1.6 with various fixes and additional features.
Aside from being able to open PDF files quickly, Sumatra PDF can also be used to read XPS files, DjVu, CBZ, LaTeX and CBR. DjVu including document formats have been widely used to scan the document because its relatively small size compared to PDF. Special to read XPS files, it is necessary to install Ghostscript on your computer.
In addition to very fast loading, this application also comes with simple menus (standard) and easy to use. Sumatra PDF can also be used as an Image Viewer or application to open/view the picture (just drag the folder containing the image and place it in Sumatra PDF). The application also will display a list of PDFs that have been opened in a thumbnail so it is quite helpful.
Sumatra PDF can be run on Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7. And this application is also a free open source so that for programmers who want to learn or develop it, can also download the source codes Sumatra PDF. Sumatra PDF was developed by Krzysztof Kowalczyk.
Changes in this release:
- add support for displaying DjVu documents
- display Frequently Read list when no document is open
- add support for displaying Postscript documents (requires recent Ghostscript version to be already installed)
- add support for displaying a folder containing images: drag the folder to SumatraPDF window
- support clickable links and a Table of Content for XPS documents
- display printing progress and allow to cancel it
- add Print toolbar button
- experimental: previewing of PDF documents in Windows Vista and 7. Creates thumbnails and displays documents in Explorer's Preview pane. Needs to be explicitly selected during install process. We've had reports that it doesn't work on Windows 7 x64.
